In short:
ak-retroturns the git history of a time period into a retro report with real numbers and 3 to 5 recommendations. It does not hand off to a next skill; it stops at the report. Only when you pick HTML does it call onak-frontend-designandak-diagramto build the page. It only reads the repo: no commits, no code edits, no guessed numbers.
Disclosure: I maintain AgentKit and have an affiliate relationship with it: the AgentKit link in this post is an affiliate link; buying through it gets you 30% off.
Summary
Use it at the end of a sprint, a week or a quarter, when you want to see what the team got done without counting by hand. The report covers Velocity, Code Health, commit type mix, the most edited files, plan progress, Highlights and Recommendations. Every derived metric comes with its formula so you can check it yourself.

C --> E["Stop, you read and decide"]
D --> EThe four core ideas of the skill:
| Idea | Question | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Time range | What period does the report cover? | Default 7 days; 2w, 1m, or 2026-07-01:2026-09-30 |
| N/A instead of guesses | What does the report say when data is missing? | No gh means N/A; a git error never becomes 0 commits |
| Metrics describe, they do not score | What do commit and line counts tell you? | Churn above 3x is a talking point, not anyone's productivity |
| One history snapshot | Which history are the numbers taken from? | Records HEAD revision, shallow clone or not, filters by committer date |
The most important caveat: the numbers are descriptive signals only. The test-to-code ratio counts file names, not test coverage, and the --team table is not a leaderboard.
Sample prompt for looking back at the past week:
/ak-retro 7dThe first argument is the time range: 7d (default), 2w, 1m, sprint or YYYY-MM-DD:YYYY-MM-DD. The flags:
| Flag | What it is for | Since ak |
|---|---|---|
--compare | Compares with the previous period | 1.0.0 |
--team | Splits metrics by author | 1.0.0 |
--format html|md | Picks the report format | 1.0.0 |
--no-antv, --no-diagram-design, --no-editorial-visuals | Turns off illustrations in the HTML page | 2.13.0 |
Below is the detailed version: the run flow, 4 situations with prompts, each flag explained (when to use it, when you do not need it, what you get), the change history by ak release, and common pitfalls. Read "ak-retro: turn git history into a retro report" on modernEngineer and apply it to this repo.
1. Call the content_get tool of the modernengineer MCP server with locale "en", slug "ak-retro". If the modernengineer MCP server is not connected, stop and walk me through connecting it from https://modernengineer.dev/en/mcp.
2. Summarize the main steps of the piece and point out which apply to this repo.
