Quick summary:
/planin Oh-my-pi (OMP) is a runtime mode: it locks the session read-only so the agent can investigate without editing the project./skill:ak-planin AgentKit is a Skill that writes an implementation roadmap to files (plan.mdplus phase files) for review and handoff toak-cook. Use/planwhen you need a safe investigation, and/skill:ak-planwhen you need a durable roadmap. If you want both, run them one after the other, and do not run/skill:ak-planinside Plan mode.
Both commands say "plan", so it is easy to assume they are interchangeable, or that turning on both gives you more thorough planning. In practice, nesting them gets the workflow stuck at the file-writing step. If both plans do get written, they drift apart.
Disclosure: I maintain AgentKit and have an affiliate relationship with it: the AgentKit link in this guide is an affiliate link. For OMP, I am an independent researcher, not part of the development team, with no commercial relationship.
Note: the current AgentKit beta (since 3.0.0-beta.35, October 21, 2026) changed skill names from ak:<name> to ak-<name>, and the commands in this post use the new names: Claude Code calls /ak-plan, Codex calls $ak-plan. On an older version, swap ak- back to ak: to get the matching command.
Versions I checked: I ran the full workflow on 2026-09-01 on OMP 18.0.11 with the AgentKit beta of that time, on the pi-omp profile. On 2026-10-03 I re-checked against the OMP 18.4.0 docs and omp --help, without re-running everything on newer AgentKit releases. Where something comes only from the docs, I say so.
I choose by what I want in hand at the end
Before I type the word "plan", I ask one question: do I need to lock what the agent can do, or do I need a delivery document?
Think of a kitchen. OMP Plan mode is the switch that locks the gas: you may open the cupboards, inspect the ingredients and write down how to cook, but you cannot light the flame yet. AgentKit ak-plan is the process for building the menu and the work tickets: which dish comes first, who owns it, what must be checked. One controls what the runtime is allowed to do, the other produces a document for delivery.
| What you need | What to use |
|---|---|
| Investigate a change without letting the agent edit the project | OMP /plan |
Produce plan.md, phases, dependencies, test gates and a handoff | AgentKit /skill:ak-plan |
| Both | Run them in sequence: /plan, Save and quit, then /skill:ak-plan in a normal session |
/skill:ak-plan suits multi-file refactors, migrations, auth, payments, data integrity, or work that has to continue across sessions, because that work needs a plan you can reread in another session. /plan suits the case where you only want the agent to look first and propose, without touching any file.
